Eddie Redmayne auditioned for Star Wars 7 villain Kylo Ren
Asked whether he auditioned for the role of General Hux, the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ star revealed that he was actually up for the part of Dark Side bad guy, Kylo Ren.
“No. So, I was going for, I think, for Adam Driver,” he said. “They gave me like a Star Trek scene – or like something from Pride and Prejudice. It was one of those films. With films that top secret, they don’t give you the actual lines.”
“So they give you a scene from Pride and Prejudice, but then they tell you you’re auditioning for the baddie. If you’re me, you then put some ridiculous voice on.”
It turns out that Redmayne was perhaps a little too eager to land the role of a ‘Star Wars’ villain… and rather than playing the role naturally, he put on his best Darth Vader voice.
“That was really a hilarious moment,” he explained. “Because it was Nina Gold, who I have to thank a lot because she’s cast me in several films. And she was just sitting there and I was trying again and again with different versions of my kind of “koohh paaaah” [Darth Vader breathing sound] voice.”
But as we all know, he didn’t quite nail it.
“After like ten shots she’s like, ‘You got anything else?’ I was like, ‘No’.”
Of course, the villainous role eventually went to Adam Driver, with Redmayne instead bagging the leading role in ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ - the upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ spin-off.
But it looks as though it could have been very different all round.
And I’m not sure Adam Driver would have made a convincing Newt Scamander…
‘Star Wars 8’ heads to cinemas on 15 December 2017.
